Review: Toybox Turbos (VRFocus)

Added: 17.12.2014 0:15 | 1 views | 0 comments

VRFocus - Codemasters have broken new ground. A full title released for a piece of hardware not yet publicly available, and polished in its support despite the limited audience. Technical demos are commonplace for virtual reality (VR) at present, as are Steam Greenlight campaigns and Kickstarters; but a full release from a big studio ready to download and play on an Oculus Rift right now? Thats far less familiar.

Added: 16.12.2014 15:11 | 1 views | 0 comments

VRFocus - Despite having only been revealed in September, Gear VR, Samsungs smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) has quickly become one of the most important and exciting products in the industry. Not only is this one of the first HMDs to come from a major electronics manufacturer, but it also marks the release of Oculus Rift HMD creator Oculus VRs first commercial product, having been developed in partnership with Samsung. Usually when a modern videogame includes the word Simulator in its title its the sign of a comedy experience such as Goat Simulator or Surgeon Simulator. Thats not the case with Astronaut Simulator, which has this week launched a Steam Greenlight campaign, hoping to secure enough positive votes to be approved for sale on Valves digital store come full release. Should the campaign prove to be a success then the title will launch with support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted displays (HMD) first development kit (DK1).

Make it a (Virtual) Reality: Super Smash Bros.

Added: 12.12.2014 23:11 | 3 views | 0 comments

VRFocus - Virtual reality (VR) in its current state is best applied to slower, more plodding experiences so that users can acclimatise to the technology without worrying about simulation sickness. On first thought, then, the fast-paced, head-spinning battles of the Super Smash Bros. series seem to be exactly the opposite of what youd want to see in VR, then. Four-player first-person timed-matches in which each combatant struggles to survive as theyre knocked to and fro? Thats a recipe for disaster on current Oculus Rift kits. But, then again, who said that first-person perspective had to be from the fighters view?

VRFocus - As 2014 draws to a close, consumer virtual reality (VR) is closer than ever, although the topic of input remains an issue. VR specialists are yet to find a definitive standard for controlling VR experiences, despite numerous Kickstarter crowd-funding campaigns for new controllers and concepts. Even Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) creator Oculus VR has been looking into input and has this week announced a huge step forward in its research with the acquisition of hand-tracking technology company, Nimble VR.
